First Step Employment Program
The First Step Employment Program provides approximately 100 newcomers annually with orientation to the Canadian job market, as well as the skills and confidence to pursue their employment goals.
First Step Group Spaces Available
We are now taking applications for seats in the First Step Program.If you are a newcomer to Canada who needs help finding work and you have low-upper intermediate English skills and are able to attend a 4-week full-time, come to an information-registration session. The First Step employment program is for people with lower - upper intermediate English with little or no Canadian work experience, who are eligible to work in Canada (you must either have a Social Insurance Number or have applied for one before you register).
The eight-week program includes four weeks of in-class instruction, involving:
• Planning and setting job search goals
• Job search skills: learn to write a résumé and cover letter, develop interview skills and self-marketing skills for the "hidden" and "visible" job markets
• Learning to use the Internet to research and apply to jobs and employers
• Scheduled time for independent job search
• 24 hours of English for the workplace and job search
Following the in-class part of the program, if you are still unemployed:
- Up to four weeks of job search support through weekly one-to-one sessions
- Job placement assistance
